HERE Maps by Nokia vs Apple Maps vs. Google Maps apps update

HERE Maps by Nokia vs other iOS mapping solutions redux

HERE Maps by Nokia was just released for iPhone and iPad and aims to take on Apple's own iOS Maps for a place on your Home screen. The real question is, does it stack up to offerings that are already available natively or in the App Store?

We recently took a look at native mapping solutions for iOS including iOS 6 Maps, iOS 5 Maps, and maps.google.com. We stacked them head to head and determined what the strengths and weaknesses of each were. We also took a look at alternative navigation apps including Navigon, Scout, and TomTom and figured out which were the best solutions.

HERE Maps offers driving, walking, and transit information on both iPhone and iPad. The first thing you'll notice is that voice guided navigation is not available for driving, which doesn't make a lot of sense. You can, however, obtain audible walking directions.

The interface of HERE Maps is very slimmed down and only provides you with what you need on the screen at any given time. As far as map views are concerned, you can choose between regular map, satellite, public transport, and live traffic views. Community views is also available which are maps that are updated by the people around you regularly. Depending on where you live will depend on whether community views is a useful feature. In my area, I couldn't find anything on community views within 50 miles of me.

To find a place, you can simply tap in the search field and start typing. HERE will try and auto suggest what you are typing. If it finds it you can simply tap on it. It will show you the location on the map. Tapping on the place will bring up more information on it including the address, phone, an option to share it, and the route button. Tapping on the route button will then allow you to choose between driving, walking, and transit directions.

Underneath the location information you'll see a list of nearby places. You can toggle between food, shopping, nightlife, sights, and public transport. It's a nice feature while traveling and something tourists will appreciate when walking around.

HERE Maps won't be taking over as my main navigation app anytime soon but it will remain on my iPhone when I'm traveling. The main reason is for the walking and transit support as well as the nearby places feature. It isn't much use to me while stuck in a car since it doesn't support voice navigation for driving, it's a nice app to have when exploring new areas on foot.

Any other time, I'll stick with either iOS 6 Maps or Scout by Telenav.

Inside the Current New York Real Estate Market | Assurance

Long Island City waterfront real estate may be impacted by Superstorm Sandy

Most of the luxury high-rises along the western Queens waterfront didn?t flood or lose power ? but they may be the latest victims of Superstorm Sandy.

Potential buyers, insurers and banks may now be reluctant to invest in prime Long Island City real estate located in hurricane evacuation Zone A, real estate experts said.

But the same experts also said they doubt the market will suffer a debilitating long-term slump, citing the lure of waterfront living and the short memories of buyers.

?What [Sandy] may do is slow down sales activity in harder hit areas,? said real estate appraiser Jonathan Miller. But if a storm of this magnitude ?happens again in short order, then all bets are off.?

The storm may also make it harder for developers to secure financing to build in evacuation zones. It also might become increasingly difficult for buyers to obtain mortgages and home insurance in those areas, he said.

?Lenders are generally afraid of their own shadow,? Miller said. ?So they?re looking for reasons not to lend.?

Rosemary Scanlon, dean of New York University?s Schack Institute of Real Estate, said the market will rebound.

?The fears were widespread that people would move out of New York? after 9/11, she said. ?It didn?t happen.?

But buildings ? especially in Zone A ? will need to be constructed differently, she said. Boilers and electrical equipment may need to be moved to higher floors, generators may become standard and towers may now be built further from the shore.

?Building on the waterfront was considered to be a great idea until the storm came,? she said.

Manhattan real estate market in good health; momentum continues

The market keeps showing its good health and more specifically at its two opposite ends: the entry level segment and the luxury segment.

The statistics are clear. According to Miller Samuel appraisal firm, the market share of studios and one bedrooms sold rose from 51% in the third quarter of 2010 to 55% in the third quarter of 2012. At the same time, three (or more) bedrooms sales went up from a share of 13% to 15%.

That means that two bedrooms sales volume declined from 37% to 29%. The decreasing affordability of Manhattan rentals, coupled with the fact that entry level buyers are usually the first to respond to falling interest rates, is pushing renters to become buyers.

At the upper end of the market, international investors help selling out NYC most sought after luxury dwellings.

Local lenders have been consistently gaining market share. For example Investors Bank, based in New Jersey, had its strongest month to date in June 2012 when it produced its largest loan volume. The bank?s commercial loan portfolio has grown from $700 million in 2008 to today?s $3 billion.

Hurricane Sandy Aftermath: How It Affected New York Real Estate

New York Real Estate Market Affected by Sandy

New York Real Estate Market Affected by Sandy

Hurricane Sandy destroyed thousands of homes in the Northeast, reportedly inflicting as much as $50 billion worth of damage and sparking a slew of relief efforts aimed at providing housing aid for storm-affected victims.

But along with putting many homeowners? lives on hold, Hurricane Sandy also brought housing sales in hard-hit regions to a screeching halt, highlighting how a disaster can delay or altogether derail real estate activity in affected markets.

Sandy?s impact on real estate activity ?went unbelievably far,? said George S. Wonica, a Realtor based in the New York City borough of Staten Island, one of the hardest-hit regions. (Pictured above is one home damaged by Sandy in the Staten Island neighborhood of New Dorp.)

By outright destroying some homes for sale, the storm sank a number of deals in a flash. Since storm damage to a home can significantly drive down its value, both lenders and buyers have reason to want to put the brakes on a deal following a disaster.

Paul's top ten blog tips | Kate Toon Copywriter

This is a guest-post from the dashing Paul Hassing. What he don?t know about blogging, ain?t worth knowing, so I asked him to share his toppest tips?

Kate asked for my realio trulio top ten blogging tips. As I?ve got hundreds of the buggers, I had to ponder, cull, winnow and sift to pick the real gems. Here are the results, for your utility and pleasure. icon smile Paul?s top ten blog tips

1. Topic

Choose a topic you know and love. Not only will you have more fun, you?ll almost never get writer?s block. The more of yourself you put in your posts, the more readers will reward you in kind.

2. Structure

My proven, thrice-tested, quick-and-easy blog post recipe is:

  • Topic.
  • True story.
  • Broader context.
  • Further reading.
  • Conclusions.
  • Questions.
  • Comments.
  • Debate.
  • Fun!

When you work to this structure, even the most complex issues become manageable.

3.?? Wisdom

Collectively, readers know infinitely more than you. So be humble and learn from them. If a reader writes a comment that?s longer and more authoritative than your post, rejoice in the honour. Never ever ever underestimate your audience.

4.?? Comment

For every 100 readers, only one will speak. Entice just one more person to play and you double your discussion. A commenter debate can expand your post 5-50 times. More important than the words is the wisdom they contain. To kill trolls and encourage shy readers, insist that all comments are polite. Clever and relevant are optional.

5.?? Response

Answer every polite comment swiftly, personally, comprehensively and gratefully. Don?t berate readers for going ?off topic?. Tangential debates can eclipse ?ordinary? ones ? to the delight of all.

6.?? Link

External links to further reading show you value readers? brains, not eyeballs. They?ll reward you by returning. Note: most readers prefer external links in separate screens. So don?t ?boot? people from the post they?re reading. Also, use italics for emphasis. If you underline words (like I used to) readers may think they?re clickable links.

7.?? Aim

The more you woo search engines, the less human your words become. Put readers first, second and third!

8.?? Tone

In all my years of blogging, the most powerful word I?ve found is ?you?. Better yet, it doesn?t wear out with use.

9.?? Concision

Tired eyes and tiny attention spans demand pithy content. Keep your words, sentences and paragraphs short. If a sentence is too complicated, riddle it with bullets. If a story?s too long, do a trilogy. Many readers enjoy serialisation and suspense.

10.?? Momentum

Readers go where readers are. If you can beat inertia, momentum is sublime. In other words, keep at it!

Your turn!

Well, what do you think? Yes, no, maybe, all of the above or other [define]?

I?d love to know ?

I believe frank feedback is the shortest, surest path to excellence. So please give it to me with both barrels!

Cowboys beat Browns 23-20 in wild OT finish

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) ? Tony Romo persevered through a career-high seven sacks, even avoiding costly mistakes that have dogged his career as he ran from constant pressure.

Just when he had Dallas in position to finish a rally and beat Cleveland, Romo lost a fumble that left the Cowboys scrambling to survive a wild ending Sunday in the first overtime game at Cowboys Stadium.

Dallas did find a way to extend the Browns' road losing streak to 12 games when Dan Bailey kicked a 38-yard field goal with 6:07 left in the extra period, giving the Cowboys a 23-20 victory. Bailey also made a tying kick with 2 seconds remaining in regulation.

"Had it all the way," Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said, smiling, as he walked into the postgame locker room.

Not quite, but it looked that way late in the fourth quarter when Romo had just put the Cowboys ahead 17-13 with a 28-yard scoring pass to Dez Bryant, who had a career-high 145 yards receiving. Anthony Spencer sacked Browns rookie Brandon Weeden on the next drive, forced a fumble and recovered it at the Cleveland 18 with 5:45 remaining.

Romo gave it right back, though, fumbling two plays later ? his first turnover in three games ? as he was hit by Frostee Rucker while trying to avoid the sixth Cleveland sack. Dallas' offensive line didn't have left tackle Tyron Smith for most of the game because of an ankle injury.

"I obviously need to hold onto the ball and not let the guy come from behind and let the ball come out," Romo said. "That could have been a big one."

The Cowboys made one goal-line stand in the final minutes, but the Browns (2-8) got another chance and went ahead 20-17 on Weeden's 17-yard pass to Benjamin Watson with 1:07 remaining.

Dallas drove to the Cleveland 9 in the dying seconds, keyed by a 35-yard pass interference penalty on Sheldon Brown. The Cowboys tried to throw into the end zone twice, then settled for Bailey's tying kick.

Dallas won for the first time in six games when Romo is sacked at least five times. Despite the constant pressure, he still finished 35 of 50 for 313 yards with the touchdown to Bryant, who had 12 catches for a career-high 145 yards.

"Tony did a really good job of playing with poise," Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said. "When you play quarterback and you have a lot of negative plays ... it's easy to kind of get out of yourself and do some things you shouldn't be doing."

Referee Ed Hochuli carried on a running commentary in explaining replays and other rulings on the huge video board, and the most critical came in overtime when the officials ruled an incompletion on a throw that Miles Austin dropped.

The Cowboys were in position for a winning field goal, and replays appeared to show Austin had possession and took two steps before the ball was knocked out. The Browns recovered the loose ball, and called timeout to allow more time for a review. Hochuli announced that the play wasn't reviewable, although that was one time he didn't explain his reasoning; it wasn't reviewable because a whistle had blown the play dead.

"I pretty much knew by the way they called it that it was not reviewable," Browns coach Pat Shurmur said. "But I wanted to make sure they had time to get it all right."

Cleveland looked like the winner at halftime, leading 13-0 while Romo was running for cover and the crowd was booing repeatedly. But Dallas scored on its first three possessions of the second half, capped by Romo's toss to Bryant.

After Weeden and Romo traded fumbles, Weeden took the Browns to the Dallas 1, but bruising running back Trent Richardson was stuffed on third down and Weeden threw incomplete with 1:42 remaining.

The Browns weren't finished, though. They used all three timeouts and forced a Dallas punt. The Cowboys' John Phillips was penalized for a horse collar tackle on Joshua Cribbs, even though replay showed Phillips grabbing Cribbs' hanging dreadlocks rather than his jersey. With the ball at the 17, Weeden found Watson in the middle of the end zone on the next play, just as he did on a 10-yard play for the game's first score.

The Cowboys had finally scored on a 44-yard field goal with 5:44 remaining in third quarter, then abandoned an ineffective running game. Romo completed passes on the first seven plays, including a 30-yarder to Bryant, before Felix Jones went the final 2 yards on the ground to get Dallas within 13-10 early in the fourth quarter.

Dallas got the ball back quickly when safety Gerald Sensabaugh stuffed Richardson a yard short of a first down in the open field, and the subsequent drive to Bryant's touchdown included two of seven penalties on Cleveland's secondary. There were also two defensive penalties on Dallas' tying drive in regulation, and the Browns had 12 penalties for 129 yards overall.

"What are you supposed to do when a receiver is pushing you?" said Browns safety T.J. Ward. "I felt like we were playing one-handed out there."

Richardson fell just short of becoming the first Browns rookie with three straight 100-yard games. He finished with 95 yards rushing, and added 49 yards receiving.

Weeden was 20 of 35 for 210 yards with the two scores to Watson, who had four catches for 47 yards.

NOTES: Browns K Phil Dawson, who grew up in the Dallas area, extended the NFL's longest active field goal streak to 25 by hitting from 51 and 47 yards. He's 19 of 19 this year. ... The Cowboys are 125-125 in the regular season since 1997. ... Browns WR Josh Cooper didn't return after injuring a knee in the second quarter. CB Buster Skine, who started in place of Joe Haden, sustained a concussion on a play when Ward was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct on a hit to Cowboys WR Kevin Ogletree.

5 Thanksgivi?ng Branding Tips

Author: Charlie Cook ? | ? November 19th, 2012

How can you use Thanksgiving to build your brand and grow your business?

Here are 5 ways to attract more clients, build a better brand and make your company stand out ? all year long?

1. To start with focus your business on giving, on helping your clients instead of just trying to take their money. A client-focused branding strategy wins their hearts and their minds ? not to mention access to their wallets.

2. Take this week as an opportunity to contact every client you?re currently working with, and personally thank them for their business. And when I say personally, I mean pick up the phone and talk to them. They?ll show their appreciation by giving you more business.

3. Send a gift. Yes, most companies who do this send one at Christmas, but if you do it at Thanksgiving your gift will get far more attention. And you can follow up with a call the week after.

4. Mail cards, too. Yes thank them twice, or even thrice. But make sure to personalize them, add something specific about working with each of them.

5. Pick a cause to support, and give back to the community. Giving money, a one-time gift or a monthly gift pledge is good. You can also share your time and expertise too.

This week and all throughout the holiday season ? keep a focus on client concerns, problems and the value you provide to differentiate yourself from your competition. When you do ? you?ll strengthen your brand and increase your market share.

Help for blighted suburbs meets French hostility

(AP) ? When the blighted housing projects ringing major French cities exploded in nationwide riots, France pledged quick action to fix them. Seven years on, the suburban projects remain islands of despair, lofty promises of rebirth largely forgotten. So a new plan to spend millions to help residents turn their neighborhoods around seemed cause for celebration.

Instead, it met a wall of resistance and outright hostility. The reason: the benefactor was the wealthy Arab emirate of Qatar.

The oil-rich state less than the size of Connecticut has exerted an outsized influence as a global bankroller, putting it at the cutting edge of an accelerating power shift between traditional Western powers and emerging economies. As Europe is engulfed in crisis, Qatar has been on a global spending spree, buying stakes in luxury brands, acquiring soccer club Paris St. Germain and financing London's "Shard" ? the EU's tallest building. Now, to the consternation of the French, the emirate wants to make a major humanitarian investment in the West.

It all started a year ago when 10 enterprising local officials from the heavily immigrant suburbs bypassed France's sleek diplomatic machine and knocked on the door of Qatar's emir with a request for help to fund the dreams of budding entrepreneurs without means.

In fairytale fashion, their wish was fulfilled beyond their expectations: The emir pledged a euro 50 million ($65 million) investment fund.

But the offer met a storm of protests by politicians back home, horrified that an outsider would leave its footprint in France's restive neighborhoods. Wounded pride may have played a role. Many found it hard to accept that a small Arab country might succeed where France itself had fallen short.

"France failed in its mission," said Leila Leghmara, one of the officials who made the trip to Qatar. "And now Qatar looks like the savior ... We touched where it hurt."

Permeating the hostile response was suspicion that the tiny Muslim state may have a special agenda at a time when fears of terrorism by Islamist extremists and a perceived infiltration of Muslim culture in French life have been on the rise. Was Qatar using its deep pockets to buy the sympathies of the many Muslims in the housing projects ? and ultimately become a power broker within France itself?

Far-right leader Marine Le Pen called the Qatari investment an "Islamist Trojan horse" while independent politician Nicolas Dupont-Aignan, who champions national sovereignty, said France would be "prostituting itself" by accepting the money. Even some members of mainstream parties balked at the Arab largesse.

The saga came to a head last month when the French government effectively hijacked the initiative, pledging matching funds but spreading the butter over all of France's disadvantaged regions ? and eliminating the focus on the disadvantaged suburbs. Far worse for the project's originators, the government put the funds under the control of a state bank, kicking the founders out of the driver's seat.

Now, a year after their visit to the palaces of Doha, the 10 who bucked a system that has failed the suburbs worry the money may never reach those they hope to help ? ordinary people from their neighborhoods with big ideas bereft of any hope of backing. The rioting that raged for weeks in 2005 was fueled by pent-up frustration about the dead-end futures of immigrants and their descendants in the forgotten suburbs.

The project's original champions dismiss fears of sinister forces at play in Qatar's offer.

"Qatar isn't going to buy France," said Leghmara. "This delirious thinking has to stop." Defenders of the plan note that nobody saw anything pernicious when Qatar raised its stake last year in France's media and defense group Lagardere to 10 percent, making it the largest single shareholder ? even though that investment goes to the heart of France's security apparatus.

Investing in the poor neighborhoods that ring French cities does represent a rare example of Qatar using its soft power to directly influence lives, as it is doing elsewhere. Last month, Qatar's emir, Sheik Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, visited the Gaza Strip, the Palestinian territory controlled by the Islamist militant Hamas ? branded as terrorists by the West. He launched $400 million worth of projects, including housing, a hospital and roads.

The no-strings-attached humanitarian investment in the West by an emerging economy is rare, perhaps unique.

However, Qatar insists that its fund for France is not charity.

"Qatar does business, not philanthropy," Ambassador Mohamed Al-Kuwari told Metro, the free daily, in his country's only reaction to the noisy controversy. "We have no political mission."

Whatever Qatar's motives, experts say the emirate's helping hand for the suburbs simply touches on France's sensitivities about its place in the world as it struggles with its economic downturn and strives to remain a diplomatic power.

"The symbol is very powerful," said Karim Bitar, senior fellow at the Paris-based Institute for International and Strategic Relations. "Qatar has become the conjunction of all French fears."

Two French presidents tried to figure out how to deal with the Qatari offer, first conservative Nicolas Sarkozy and now socialist Francois Hollande ? who last month confirmed the compromise of spreading the funds across all neglected regions.

"Each time a nation wants to invest, we say very good, we'll do it together because we can tell you what is strategic, and what is not," Hollande said in explaining his decision on France 24 TV.

The 10 officials looked to Qatar because of the glass ceiling that keeps most residents of the suburbs ? stigmatized by their often Arabic names or even their addresses ? from getting decent jobs let alone the financial backing for business ventures. French benefactors in the private sector simply aren't there.

"There are lots of people who want to succeed," said Leghmara. "But they find themselves standing in front of closed doors."

Aneld has received pitches for hundreds of projects in need of funding, from high-tech enterprises to a literary cafe. Salim Benradhia's plan for an affordable gourmet restaurant on a barge on the Seine is among them.

"In the suburbs, we don't always have access to Paris restaurants," said Benradhia, a father of two in Clichy-Sous-Bois, where the 2005 riots ignited. "This would make a beautiful night out."

But the banks refused him a loan. Now Benradhia, like others, fears that if the state bank in charge of the project makes all the calls on funding, "we will once again be left on the sidelines."

Now, the local officials who traveled to Qatar fear they will be erased from the picture ? along with their plan.

"After all the work we did, we can talk about a hijacking" if the money doesn't help the projects, said Aneld president Kamel Hamza. "It should (help) those who don't necessarily come from the right families or don't have anyone to guarantee a bank loan."

Figures representing France's minorities say accepting Qatar's generosity is just common sense.

"Better money from Qatar than no money at all," said Patrick Lozes, who helped found the Representative Council of Black Associations.

BBC apologizes for broadcasting abuse allegations

(AP) ? For the last month, the BBC has been heavily criticized for not airing allegations of child sex abuse committed by one of its star hosts, the late Jimmy Savile. Now it is in crisis because it did broadcast claims against a former senior politician that turned out to be wrong.

In a humiliating retreat for one of the world's leading broadcasters, the BBC apologized Friday for airing a report featuring accusations from a child abuse victim which the victim later retracted.

The BBC also said it was suspending investigations at "Newsnight" ? its premiere investigative program. That's the same show under investigation for not airing a report on Savile.

Friday's apology stems from a BBC report aired last week that indicated there were child abuse allegations against an unnamed senior politician from the Margaret Thatcher era. The network did not name the politician, but Internet chatter identified him as Alistair McAlpine, a Conservative Party member of the House of Lords.

Angry about the rumors, McAlpine came forward Friday to denounce the claims as completely false. His accuser, abuse victim Steve Messham, then apologized and said he had identified the wrong man.

That led the BBC to say it apologized "unreservedly" for broadcasting the report. The apology came after McAlpine's lawyer threatened legal action.

The BBC's apology came after a week of claims and counterclaims in the spreading abuse scandal. Since accusations surfaced last month that renowned BBC host Savile sexually abused young victims for decades without being exposed, scores of adults have come forward to claim that their own allegations of sex assault in the past were ignored.

With the country reeling over how to respond to a torrent of new abuse claims, Prime Minister David Cameron on Friday warned the media and the public of the danger of shredding the reputations of innocent figures.

"Effectively, you are casting lots of aspersions about lots of people without any evidence," Cameron said. "You have to be careful you don't start some sort of witch hunt against some people who might be entirely innocent."

Cameron's words, coming a day after he was handed a list on live television of high-profile figures named in Internet rumors as possible sex offenders, took on greater significance Friday after it emerged that McAlpine was wrongly accused in a case of mistaken identity.

Last week, "Newsnight" aired a report on allegations related to sex abuse in Wales in the 1970s and 1980s. The program interviewed abuse victim Messham, who claimed that previous reports into the Wales scandal had failed to examine abuse by someone he described as a senior Conservative Party figure at the time, but did not name.

On Friday, McAlpine said he was likely the political figure referred to in the "Newsnight" report. McAlpine, who was Conservative Party treasurer in the era of Thatcher, insisted he had never been involved in the abuse of children and suggested that he had been the victim of mistaken identity.

That turned out to be true.

Messham, the abuse victim, later Friday told the BBC he had offered "sincere and humble apologies" to McAlpine for wrongly identifying his abuser.

"After seeing a picture in the past hour of the individual concerned, this (is) not the person I identified by photograph presented to me by the police in the early 1990s, who told me the man in the photograph was Lord McAlpine," Messham told the BBC.

The BBC's decision to broadcast Messham's initial claim came as it conducted an internal inquiry into why "Newsnight" had shelved an investigation into Savile late last year, weeks before the organization screened tribute shows about his life and work. Savile, who presented music and children's shows on BBC, died in October 2011.

When its rival ITV aired allegations about Savile last month, the expose led to a widespread discussion of other, unrelated sexual abuse in Britain in the recent past ? including cases in Wales in which Messham was a victim.

Amid frenzied speculation, Cameron was on Thursday handed a list of individuals who have been the subject of Internet speculation during an interview by ITV's "This Morning" program. In his haste, the show's presenter Phillip Schofield fleetingly showed the note to a camera, revealing some of the identities.

McAlpine said that rumors spreading online and the actions of the BBC and ITV had left him with little option other than to comment. "In order to mitigate, if only to some small extent, the damage to my reputation I must publicly tackle these slurs and set the record straight," he said in a statement.

The politician said that he had never abused Messham or any other child, and had never visited children's homes or a hotel in the Welsh town of Wrexham where the victim told the BBC that sex abuse had taken place.

Meanwhile, Britain's television standards regulator Ofcom confirmed that it had received complaints about ITV's "This Morning" over its handling of the child abuse issue.

"The action of presenting a random list from the Internet of alleged 'suspects' to the prime minister, live on television, was a grave error of judgment," said Conservative lawmaker Stuart Andrew, who is among those to have filed a complaint.

Schofield, the ITV presenter, stressed it was never his intention to identify anyone on the list and apologized if viewers were able see names. "I was not accusing anyone of anything and it is essential that it is understood that I would never be part of any kind of witch hunt," he said in a statement.

ITV said in a statement it was "extremely regrettable" that a "misjudged camera angle" may have made names briefly visible. The broadcaster echoed Schofield in insisting that the program was not making any accusations against anyone in particular.

Iraq reconsiders $4 billion Russian arms plans

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Iraqi officials say the government is reconsidering plans to buy more than $4 billion in arms from Russia.

Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki last month traveled to Moscow and outlined plans to buy the weapons, including helicopter gunships and air defense missiles.

Some Iraqi media reports, such as one that aired this week on the private al-Sharqiya TV channel, have suggested impropriety such as kickbacks by some of those involved in brokering the deal. They cite mostly unnamed sources and provide few specifics.

The prime minister's spokesman, Ali al-Moussawi, said Saturday the proposed deal is now under review.

Iraq's acting defense minister, Saadoun al-Dulaimi, insisted no money has changed hands so far and says the existing proposal "has become meaningless." He says the government plans to renegotiate the deal, seeking better terms.

Busting My Ass, So I Can Kick Yours: Aerobic work

Aerobic work is important- more than you may realise.

Many fighters and fitness enthusiasts these days are quick to dismiss aerobic work in favour of the promised benefits of HIIT for cardiovascular development. Many coaches, websites, and fitness gurus promote HIIT due to claims of improvements in both aerobic and anaerobic fitness with less time investment compared to traditional, Low-Intensity Steady-State (LISS) cardio.

However, there are several reasons to continue to include aerobic work in one's training- even if your sport is primarily anaerobic.

Aerobic training offers positive adaptations to the cardiovascular and respiratory systems that HIIT may not. The first example of this would be differences in cardiovascular hypertrophy.

Anaerobic work is performed at an extremely high intensity- as such, heart rate is significantly elevated. Because the heart has to beat so fast in order to keep up with the demands imposed upon it, the heart must become a stronger, and more enduring muscle. As a result, the adaptations that occur come from the muscles of the wall of the heart thickening and strengthening in order to be able to keep up with demands.

LISS-type aerobic work, on the other hand, generally involves lower heart rates. As such, the heart is more able to fill with blood before having to beat again. This enables the left ventricle to become more able to handle a larger volume of blood with each beat, allowing it to perform more work with less effort. The adaptations involved here come from the left ventricle itself enlarging, as opposed to the walls of the heart becoming more hypertrophied. This leads to more work being done each beat.

So what does this mean?

If your heart is able to do more with each beat, then the same work would require a lower heart rate during activities. This means that because you are able to do the same work at a lower heart rate, if you were to operate at the same heart rate, the potential for work to be done increases. This means that not only does aerobic work become easier, but more intense work is able to be done before relying on anaerobic systems, delaying the onset of fatigue.

Of course, I do not mean to eschew anaerobic work- I merely wish to point out one simple reason to continue to include aerobic work into your training programe. Training needs to take on a balanced approach- make sure to make time for both aerobic and anaerobic work.

Comet collisions every six seconds explain 17-year-old stellar mystery

ScienceDaily (Nov. 8, 2012) ? Every six seconds, for millions of years, comets have been colliding with one another near a star in the constellation Cetus called 49 CETI, which is visible to the naked eye.

Over the past three decades, astronomers have discovered hundreds of dusty disks around stars, but only two -- 49 CETI is one -- have been found that also have large amounts of gas orbiting them.

Young stars, about a million years old, have a disk of both dust and gas orbiting them, but the gas tends to dissipate within a few million years and almost always within about 10 million years. Yet 49 CETI, which is thought to be considerably older, is still being orbited by a tremendous quantity of gas in the form of carbon monoxide molecules, long after that gas should have dissipated.

"We now believe that 49 CETI is 40 million years old, and the mystery is how in the world can there be this much gas around an otherwise ordinary star that is this old," said Benjamin Zuckerman, a UCLA professor of physics and astronomy and co-author of the research, which was recently published in the Astrophysical Journal. "This is the oldest star we know of with so much gas."

Zuckerman and his co-author Inseok Song, a University of Georgia assistant professor of physics and astronomy, propose that the mysterious gas comes from a very massive disk-shaped region around 49 CETI that is similar to the sun's Kuiper Belt, which lies beyond the orbit of Neptune.

The total mass of the various objects that make up the Kuiper Belt, including the dwarf planet Pluto, is about one-tenth the mass of Earth. But back when Earth was forming, astronomers say, the Kuiper Belt likely had a mass that was approximately 40 times larger than Earth's; most of that initial mass has been lost in the last 4.5 billion years.

By contrast, the Kuiper Belt analogue that orbits around 49 CETI now has a mass of about 400 Earth masses -- 4,000 times the current mass of the Kuiper Belt.

"Hundreds of trillions of comets orbit around 49 CETI and one other star whose age is about 30 million years. Imagine so many trillions of comets, each the size of the UCLA campus -- approximately 1 mile in diameter -- orbiting around 49 CETI and bashing into one another," Zuckerman said. "These young comets likely contain more carbon monoxide than typical comets in our solar system. When they collide, the carbon monoxide escapes as a gas. The gas seen around these two stars is the result of the incredible number of collisions among these comets.

"We calculate that comets collide around these two stars about every six seconds," he said. "I was absolutely amazed when we calculated this rapid rate. I would not have dreamt it in a million years. We think these collisions have been occurring for 10 million years or so."

Using a radio telescope in the Sierra Nevada mountains of southern Spain in 1995, Zuckerman and two colleagues discovered the gas that orbits 49 CETI, but the origin of the gas had remained unexplained for 17 years, until now.

Small Business Marketing: How to Market Your Business on a ...

Small businesses have been far from exempt when it comes to feeling the effects of the current economic climate of the United States. Many businesses, both small and large, have felt the crunch and have needed to adjust their budgets as such. Often, marketing budgets are one of the first areas a company chooses to cut back when financial hard times hit. Businesses can attempt to turn to banks to lend more capital in order to keep operating, but many banks have tightened their lending restrictions. According to a recent study, mid-sized banks are typically the ones that are likely to lend to small businesses. However, these banks have unfortunately been the hardest-hit when it comes to the economic downturn. The inability of mid-sized banks and the unwillingness of large and small banks to lend to small businesses has had a marked impact on small business budgets and success rates.

Luckily, there are several ways that small businesses can market products and services on a very minimal or non-existent budget. The advent of the Internet as a marketing tool has made it more possible than ever to showcase a brand without breaking the bank.

Being the Voice of an Expert

One way this can be accomplished would be to showcase the business as being the voice of an expert in the industry. This can be accomplished by posting video tutorials about things that the company specializes in, or how-to articles on subjects related to the product or service offered. Appearing to have an expert point of view can entice customers to a business website, therefore generating more web traffic and potentially driving up profits.

Use Advertising Space Shrewdly

Another way that small businesses can make the most of a minimal marketing budget would be to use any purchased ad space wisely. While it may seem counterintuitive, larger, more visible ads are not always the most effective choice. Repetition can also draw in customers. Consider that frequent website visitors may be more likely to pay attention to a company ad if it pops up every time the site is opened. It is also possible to increase the size of an ad over time ? site visitors may be more likely to notice if they see the same company becoming more invested in a particular ad space. Utilizing focused PPC strategies may be a good fit for businesses on a budget. However, it depends on the industry you?re in as more competitive industries would require bigger ad budgets.

Ensure People Can Find You on the Web

Small businesses are also wise to make sure that the company can be found with very minimal effort in a typical web search. Adding your business to an online business directory is a good start. It?s extremely important to make sure that these listings are accurate and up to date. Small businesses in particular can suffer if customers are unable to find either a physical location or a website. Making certain that popular search engines such as Google and Yahoo! have correct listings is a free and easy way to make sure customers and potential customers find the right business.

Small businesses can utilize many free or inexpensive marketing strategies to help grow a customer base. Since banks are no longer willing or able to loan money to many businesses, creativity when it comes to utilizing resources that are readily available is a must. An infographic from entrepreneur.com showcases several other ways that businesses can make the most of a small marketing budget. Small businesses as a category are often known for their ingenuity. Finding ways to market a business successfully should be no exception. The more creative the marketing, the more likely a business is to bring in customers.

(AP) ? Should marijuana be treated like alcohol? Or should it remain in the same legal category as heroin and the most dangerous drugs? Votes this week by Colorado and Washington to allow adult marijuana possession have prompted what could be a turning point in the nation's conflicted and confusing war on drugs.

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder was to talk Friday by phone with Colorado's governor, who wants to know whether the federal government would sue to block the marijuana measures. Both states are holding off on plans to regulate and tax the drug while waiting to see whether the U.S. Justice Department would assert federal authority over drug law.

The Obama administration has largely turned a blind eye to the 17 states that currently flout federal drug law by allowing people with certain medical conditions to use pot, something banned under federal law.

"In a situation like this, where our law is at loggerheads with federal law, my primary job is to listen first," Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper said Wednesday.

Hickenlooper opposed the ballot measure and has downplayed the likelihood of a commercial marijuana market materializing in Colorado.

"Based on federal law, if it's still illegal under federal law, I can't imagine that 7-Eleven is ever going to sell it," he said.

In Washington state, a spokesman for Gov. Chris Gregoire said this week that Gregoire would respect the will of the people.

"We are entering uncharted waters and many questions lie ahead as we work to implement this law," said spokesman Cory Curtis. "Because marijuana is still illegal at the federal level, we are unsure how the federal government will proceed."

Meanwhile, marijuana activists are waiting for a Washington, D.C., federal appeals court to decide whether marijuana should be reclassified from its current status as a dangerous drug with no accepted medical use.

Last year, the Drug Enforcement Administration rejected a petition by medical marijuana advocates to change the classification, which kept marijuana in the same category as drugs such as heroin. Reclassification of marijuana could open the door for more research into its medical use, so marijuana activists consider reclassification a major step.

Marijuana advocates hope the federal government maintains its current posture of mostly ignoring states that flout federal law by allowing medical use under certain circumstances.

The U.S. government has cracked down during the past two years on more than 500 marijuana dispensaries in several states, but no one has faced federal prosecution for personal use.

"It would certainly be a travesty if the Obama administration used its power to impose marijuana prohibition upon a state whose people have declared, through the democratic process, that they want it to end," said Brian Vicente, co-author of Colorado's marijuana measure.

Earlier this week, Justice Department spokeswoman Nanda Chitre said enforcement of the federal Controlled Substances Act remained unchanged.

"In enacting the Controlled Substances Act, Congress determined that marijuana is a Schedule I controlled substance," Chitre said. "We are reviewing the ballot initiative and have no additional comment at this time."

Eric Brown, a spokesman for Hickenlooper, would not say whether the governor planned to disclose the details of his call with Holder.

If Colorado's marijuana ballot measure is not blocked, it would take effect by Jan. 5, the deadline for the governor to add the amendment to the state constitution. The measure allows adults to possess up to an ounce of marijuana, and six marijuana plants, though public use of the drug and driving while intoxicated are prohibited.

Colorado's measure also directs lawmakers to write regulations on how pot can be sold, with commercial sales possible by 2014.

In Washington state, marijuana possession of an ounce or less would become legal on Dec. 6 if the measure is not blocked, though setting up a state-run sales operation would take a year.

Colorado's Republican attorney general, John Suthers, is a vocal critic of marijuana legalization. But he has vowed to defend Colorado's constitutional amendment in a legal battle with the federal government.

Marijuana business owners gathered in Denver for a two-day conference cheered the votes ? but kept a close eye on their smartphones for word of a federal response.

Denver attorney Robert Corry told the crowd at the National Marijuana Business Conference that President Barack Obama sent a signal about marijuana when he made a record number of campaign visits to the battleground state this year and never talked about the marijuana vote.

"Silence equals consent. The time for the federal government to talk about marijuana legalization is over. The election has passed," Corry said to applause from the crowd. "Marijuana got 50,000 more votes than Obama on Tuesday. Don't think they didn't notice that."

But Corry quickly added that the federal marijuana approach will ultimately decide the question.

"Let's face it: the federal government is a fearsome force. They have the guns, they have the jails, they have the power," he said.

Meet Xenoceratops: Canada's newest horned dinosaur

ScienceDaily (Nov. 8, 2012) ? Scientists have named a new species of horned dinosaur (ceratopsian) from Alberta, Canada. Xenoceratops foremostensis (Zee-NO-Sare-ah-tops) was identified from fossils originally collected in 1958. Approximately 20 feet long and weighing more than 2 tons, the newly identified plant-eating dinosaur represents the oldest known large-bodied horned dinosaur from Canada.

Research describing the new species is published in the October 2012 issue of the Canadian Journal of Earth Sciences.

"Starting 80 million years ago, the large-bodied horned dinosaurs in North America underwent an evolutionary explosion," said lead author Dr. Michael Ryan, curator of vertebrate paleontology at The Cleveland Museum of Natural History. "Xenoceratops shows us that even the geologically oldest ceratopsids had massive spikes on their head shields and that their cranial ornamentation would only become more elaborate as new species evolved."

Xenoceratops (Xeno + ceratops) means "alien horned-face," referring to the strange pattern of horns on its head and the scarcity of horned dinosaur fossils from this part of the fossil record. It also honors the Village of Foremost, located close to where the dinosaur was discovered. Xenoceratops had a parrot-like beak with two long brow horns above its eyes. A large frill protruded from the back of its skull featuring two huge spikes.

"Xenoceratops provides new information on the early evolution of ceratopsids, the group of large-bodied horned dinosaurs that includes Triceratops," said co-author Dr. David Evans of the Royal Ontario Museum and University of Toronto. "The early fossil record of ceratopsids remains scant, and this discovery highlights just how much more there is to learn about the origin of this diverse group."

The new dinosaur is described from skull fragments from at least three individuals from the Foremost Formation originally collected by Dr. Wann Langston Jr. in the 1950s, and is currently housed in the Canadian Museum of Nature in Ottawa, Canada. Ryan and Evans stumbled upon the undescribed material more than a decade ago and recognized the bones as a new type of horned dinosaur. Evans later discovered a 50-year-old plaster field jacket at the Canadian Museum of Nature containing more skull bones from the same fossil locality and had them prepared in his lab at the Royal Ontario Museum.

This dinosaur is just the latest in a series of new finds being made by Ryan and Evans as part of their Southern Alberta Dinosaur Project, which is designed to fill in gaps in our knowledge of Late Cretaceous dinosaurs and study their evolution. This project focuses on the paleontology of some of the oldest dinosaur-bearing rocks in Alberta, which is less intensely studied than that of the famous badlands of Dinosaur Provincial Park and Drumheller.

"This discovery of a previously unknown species also drives home the importance of having access to scientific collections," says co-author Kieran Shepherd, curator of paleobiology for the Canadian Museum of Nature, which holds the specimen. "The collections are an untapped source of new material for study, and offer the potential for many new discoveries."

Xenoceratops was identified by a team comprising palaeontologists Dr. Michael J. Ryan, curator of vertebrate paleontology at The Cleveland Museum of Natural History; and Dr. David Evans, curator, vertebrate palaeontology of the Department of Natural History at the Royal Ontario Museum; as well as Kieran Shepherd, curator of paleobiology for the Canadian Museum of Nature.
