Reports of rare superbug jump in US, CDC says

CDC

In the U.S. today, the most common type of highly drug-resistant germs known as CREs are the Klebsiella pneumonia bacteria like those shown here. Nearly untreatable, they're being detected in a growing number of health care settings.

By JoNel Aleccia, Staff Writer, NBC News

A sharp jump in the number of rare but potentially deadly types of a superbug resistant to nearly all last-resort antibiotics has prompted government health officials to renew warnings for U.S. hospitals, nursing homes and other health care settings.

The move comes just as researchers in Israel are reporting that people colonized with dangerous CRE -- Carbapenem-resistant enterobacteriaceae -- can take more than a year before they test negative for the bacteria, making it more difficult to control -- and raising the risk of wider spread.

Reports of unusual forms of CRE have nearly doubled in the U.S., the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported this month. Of 37 cases of rare forms of CRE, including the alarming NDM ?-- New Delhi metallo-beta-lactamase -- 15 have been reported since last July.

?This increase highlights the need for U.S. health care providers to act aggressively to prevent the emergence and spread of these unusual CRE organisms,? the CDC said in a health advisory.

CREs are part of a?family of drug-resistant germs that have shown up in growing numbers of U.S. health care settings. They?re named for their ability to elude carbapenem antibiotics, the big guns in the medical arsenal. They usually strike people who are already ill and require devices such as ventilators or catheters or who have been taking antibiotics for a long time. But they can occur in any patient.

Twenty-nine of the unusual CRE cases have been NDM, up from the first case detected in the U.S. in 2010, said the CDC's Dr. Alex Kallen, a medical epidemiologist and outbreak response coordinator in the agency?s Healthcare Quality Promotion division. It's especially alarming because it confers resistance to multiple drugs and is easily transmitted to other types of bacteria.

The others were even rarer types of CRE, including VIMs, IMPs and OXA-48s, all of which produce enzymes that render most antibiotics virtually useless.

The agency called for stricter isolation and hygiene precautions, increased screening of patients potentially colonized with CRE and better communication within and between hospitals and other health care settings where the bugs can become intractable -- and deadly. CRE infections have a mortality of up to 40 percent, much higher than other health care infections, such as those caused by MRSA or C. difficile.

?Our main objective is to slow or stop the spread in places where we can identify them,? said Kallen. ?Right now, the therapeutic options are very limited.?

Health officials have been worried about them for more than a decade, particularly the KPCs, or carbapenemase-producing Klebsiella pneumonia, which have now been reported in 43 U.S. states, the CDC reports.

Nine states have reported NDMs and at least two have reported other rare forms that also block antibiotic effectiveness, including those known as VIMs, or Verona integron-encoded metallo-beta-lactamase, and IMPs. ?So far, they?ve been associated mostly with people who?ve been hospitalized in countries outside the U.S.

The bugs were in the news last summer after reports of a CRE strain of Klebsiella penumoniae roared through the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center near Washington, D.C., killing seven people, including a 16-year-old boy.

In Colorado last summer, NDM-producing CRE was detected in eight patients, the largest outbreak in the U.S. to date, according to a CDC report this month. It was found largely because the University of Colorado Hospital already has stringent surveillance protocols in place, said Dr. Michelle Barron, director of infection control and prevention. Since then, the hospital has probably tested 500 or 600 patients with unusual resistance patterns, she told NBC News. ?

None of the eight patients in the original outbreak died.?The evidence showed that patients who were colonized with the germs, but not actually sick, contributed to the spread.

That?s a point underscored by the study by Israeli doctors published Wednesday in the American Journal of Infection Control. They studied medical records of adult patients hospitalized between January 2009 and December 2010 at Shaare Zedek Medical Center, a 700-bed, university-affiliated hospital in Jerusalem.

In 97 patients with positive CRE cultures, it took a mean time of 387 days to log a negative test -- and nearly 40 percent remained positive after a year, according to Dr. Amon Yinnon, one of the study authors.

?The major concern is that an undiagnosed carrier may be admitted to hospital for totally unrelated reasons, and subsequently and unwittingly pass his CRE to other patients,? Yinnon said in an email to NBC News.

Patients who were hospitalized repeatedly were at higher risk of remaining colonized with CRE, the study found.

CDC officials hope to increase awareness of the growing problem among the general public as well as the health care providers before it gets out of control.

?I can?t predict the future, of course, but there is a concern that we can see more of these as they spread,? Kallen said. ?This can become a community bug.?

Microsoft: Nearly 7 out of 10 computers running ... - Ilonggo Tech Blog

Microsoft just unveiled details of a forensic study on malware threats that examined name-brand PCs with pirated software installed, as well as counterfeit software DVDs, sourced from Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. The study, which extends research originally conducted in December 2012, examined a total of 282 computers and DVDs?more than double the original sample?and found an average malware infection rate of 69%, an increase of six points over the preliminary study.

Findings from Microsoft?s Security Forensics team further revealed pirated copies of Windows embedded with malware spread across numerous well-known PC brands, including: Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo, and Samsung. Microsoft believes that neither the counterfeit images nor the malware originated from?or were installed by?the individual PC manufacturers. Rather, the computers were likely shipped with non-Windows operating systems, which were later replaced by individuals in the downstream supply chain or retail channel who deal in the illegal duplication and distribution of pirated software.

?Many people assume that buying a name-brand PC is all that?s required to guarantee a good and safe computing experience. They don?t think twice about the software sold with the computer, and whether or not it?s pirated,? said Keshav Dhakad, Microsoft?s director of Intellectual Property for Asia Pacific and Japan. ??But consumers need to beware: while they might think there are great deals to be had by looking the other way, the hidden cost of pirated software is significant, and contrary to popular belief, can?t be remedied by simply running anti-virus software. If a consumer can?t verify that the computer they purchased was shipped with a pre-installed, genuine copy of Windows, their risk of exposure to viruses and spyware?and the potential for data corruption, theft, and financial loss?increases exponentially.?

According to Microsoft?s study, infection rates of pirated software varied significantly across Southeast Asia: the Philippines surfaced at 42%, a full two out of every five computers and DVDs tested was infected. In Vietnam, malware was found on 66% of the pirated DVDs and a full 92% of hard drives tested.

In total, Microsoft?s testing revealed 5,601 instances and 1,131 unique strains of malware and virus infections in its Southeast Asia sample?including the highly dangerous ?Zeus? trojan.

Zeus is a password-stealing trojan known to use ?keylogging? and other mechanisms to monitor people?s online activity. Keyloggers record a user?s every keystroke in order to steal personal information, including account usernames and passwords. Criminals use this information to steal victims? identities, withdraw money from their bank accounts, make online purchases using victim?s personal information and access other private accounts. According to the RSA 2012 Cybercrime Trends Report, the Zeus trojan alone is estimated to have caused more than US$1 billion in global losses in the last five years.

Philippine Computer Emergency Response Team (PHCERT) President Lito Averia said, ?To keep information safe from cybercriminals, people need to think twice about where they buy PCs. As shown in this study, many unscrupulous retailers in Southeast Asia are selling big name PC brands to consumers with counterfeit, infected software. It?s important to remember that if you don?t know where your digital products come from, you never know what unwanted and dangerous nemeses come along for the ride.? PHCERT is a non-profit organization that aims to provide reliable and trusted point of contact for computers, Internet and other information technology related emergencies.

Atty. Ricardo Blancaflor, Director General of the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL), noted that ?while the Philippines has the lowest rate of malicious software: at 42%, it doesn?t mean that we should put our guards down. Instead, we should continue to be vigilant against pirated software as it is not only discouraging local innovation but as the studies have shown, it is detrimental to office operations.?

Microsoft advises consumers to take the following steps to avoid the inadvertent purchase of pirated software:

  • When purchasing a new PC, always ask for a genuine, pre-installed operating system.
  • Buy from a trusted reseller and avoid deals that seem ?too good to be true.?
  • Ensure all software purchases come in their original packaging.
  • When buying a PC with Windows, look for the genuine label and Certificate of Authenticity that Microsoft requires be affixed to all PCs on which Windows is pre-installed. As a further check after purchase, log on to www.howtotell.comto confirm the label is authentic.

The Dynamic Gastric Model, developed from years of research at the Institute of Food Research, has taken significant steps towards improving its commercial use by food and drug companies worldwide.

IFR and the technology management company Plant Bioscience Limited (PBL) have secured funding from the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) to further develop the Dynamic Gastric Model to validate and improve how well it simulates the release of nutrients or drugs in humans.

PBL has also signed an exclusive license agreement with Bioneer regarding use of the Dynamic Gastric Model (DGM). Bioneer has also acquired PBL's highly successful DGM contract research business (www.modelgut.com) which provides specialist DGM services to the pharmaceutical and food-related industries.

The DGM is based on 15 years of research at the Institute of Food Research, in partnership with PBL. It accurately simulates the physical and biochemical processes that occur within the human stomach. It is the world's first computer controlled, mechanical simulator of gastric digestion that works in real-time to process real chewed foods or meals and oral pharmaceutical or nutraceutical products.

The commercialisation of the model represents a significant achievement for IFR in developing research and making it commercially viable. It is an example of IFR's commitment to the translation of our science for the benefit of society and commerce.

IFR will continue to work with the DGM, as part of its core research into understanding the complex interaction between health, the food we eat and our gut. The new two-year project, with funding from the BBSRC's Super Follow on Fund scheme, is worth over 900k and will refine and improve models to ensure that IFR can continue its strategic research to determine how the nutritional quality and health benefits of the food we eat can be influenced by the way it is digested. This research at IFR in the future will continue to utilise the in vitro models which have been developed here including the DGM and the model colon.

The model will also be further developed to enable studies that would not be permitted in humans; for instance, the impact of taking drugs with alcohol, or the development of an infant formulation.

IFR's Professor Peter Wilde said: "We will clearly demonstrate how well the model simulates and predicts the availability of nutrients or drugs in humans, and to refine the model so that it can be more widely used, and therefore reduce the reliance on animal and human studies. This will significantly enhance the commercial and scientific potential of the model."

The license agreement for the Dynamic Gastric Model expands Bioneer's readily available services for pharmaceutical dosage form testing, drug discovery screening, bioequivalence assessment, and functional food analysis. The Model Gut services will be integrated into Bioneer's own service offering under the Bioneer:FARMA brand.

Professor Anette Mllertz, Head of Department at Bioneer:FARMA said: "The DGM takes our services to a highly advanced level. In combination with our existing digestion models, we can now conduct advanced analyses along the whole gastro-intestinal tract."

Martin Stocks, PBL Business Development Manager, said: "We are delighted to partner Bioneer:FARMA to take The Model Gut into an exciting new phase. The integration with Bioneer:FARMA will provide a wide array of complementary capabilities that will both expand and enable the unique capabilities of the Model Gut's technologies for determining the performance of ingested materials in the gastric and intestinal compartments."

Roman Catholic priests should be allowed to marry and have children, Britain's most senior Catholic cleric said Friday, Feb. 22, 2013. Cardinal Keith O'Brien, who heads the Roman Catholic Church in Scotland, said the requirement for priestly celibacy is "not of divine origin" and could be reconsidered. He told BBC Scotland that "the celibacy of the clergy, whether priests should marry _ Jesus didn't say that." (AP Photo/Scott Campbell, File)

(AP) ? Cardinal Keith O'Brien, Britain's highest-ranking Catholic leader, recused himself on Monday from taking part in the conclave to elect the next pope after being accused of improper conduct with priests ? an unprecedented first head to roll in the mudslinging that has followed Pope Benedict XVI's decision to resign.

O'Brien also resigned as archbishop of St. Andrews and Edinburgh, though the Vatican insisted that Benedict accepted his resignation purely because he was nearing the retirement age of 75 ? not because of the accusations. But O'Brien himself issued a statement Monday saying he would skip the conclave because he didn't want to become the focus of media attention at such a delicate time for the Catholic Church.

O'Brien has said through his spokesman that he is contesting allegations made Sunday in a British newspaper that three priests and a former priest had filed complaints to the Vatican alleging that the cardinal acted inappropriately with them. The Observer newspaper did not name the priests, but it said their allegations date back to the 1980s. There were no details about the alleged inappropriate behavior.

It is the first time a cardinal has recused himself from a conclave because of personal scandal. It comes in the wake of a grass-roots campaign to shame another cardinal, retired Los Angeles Cardinal Roger Mahony, into refraining from participating because of his role protecting sexually abusive priests.

Mahony, however, has defiantly said he would participate in the voting for the new pope.

The difference in cases boils down to the fact that O'Brien himself was accused of improper behavior, whereas Mahony has been shown to have covered up for other priests who raped and molested children ? a distinction that has long shielded bishops accused of cover-up from Vatican sanction.

Several other cardinals who will elect the next pope have been accused ? and some have even admitted ? to having failed to protect children from abusive priests; if all of them were to recuse themselves for negligence, the College of Cardinals would shrink by quite a few members.

Nevertheless, the O'Brien decision sets an historic precedent, said Terrence McKiernan of BishopAccountability.org, an online database of records on clergy abuse cases.

"It is a public demonstration of the role that clerics with inside information can have in bringing accountability to a church where secrecy has led to a crisis of sexual misconduct," he said. "Cardinals who are tainted by the crisis cannot choose the person who will solve it."

With O'Brien's decision and the decision of a frail Indonesian cardinal to stay home, there are expected to be 115 cardinals under age 80 who are eligible to vote in the conclave.

Separately Monday, Benedict changed the rules of the conclave, allowing cardinals to move up the start date if all of them arrive in Rome before the usual 15-day waiting period between the end of one pontificate and the start of the conclave. It was one of his last acts as pope before resigning Thursday.

The date of the conclave's start is important because Holy Week begins March 24 and Easter Sunday is March 31. In order to have a new pope in place for the church's most solemn liturgical period, he would need to be installed by Sunday, March 17, a tight timeframe if a conclave were to start on March 15, as per the previous rules.

And in another development Monday, Benedict decided that the contents of a secret investigation into the 2012 leaks of Vatican documents won't be shared with the cardinals ahead of the conclave. Benedict met Monday with the three elderly cardinals who conducted the probe and decided that "the acts of the investigation, known only to himself, remain solely at the disposition of the new pope," a Vatican statement said.

Speculation has been rife in the Italian media that the three cardinals ? Julian Herranz, Jozef Tomko and Salvatore De Giorgi ? would be authorized to share the information with fellow cardinals before the conclave. That assumed the cardinal electors would want to know details about the state of dysfunction in the Vatican bureaucracy and on any potentially compromised colleagues before possibly voting one into office.

Benedict appointed the three men last year to investigate the origins of leaks, which revealed petty wrangling, corruption, cronyism and even allegations of a gay plot at the highest levels of the Catholic Church. The pope's butler was convicted of aggravated theft in October for having stolen the papers and given them to a journalist who then published them in a blockbuster book.

While the three cardinals cannot share the full contents of their investigation, it's unclear if they could give subtle hints about potential papal candidates to the electors. The Vatican's assertion that only the pope knew the contents of the dossier was a clear message to readers of Italian newspapers, which have run several articles purporting to know the contents of the report.

O'Brien's decision to remain home rather than participate in the conclave made him the first head to roll in the remarkable two weeks since Benedict, 85, stunned the world and announced he was becoming the first pope in 600 years to resign. The pope said he simply didn't have the "strength of mind and body" to carry on.

It marked a dramatic end to a career that got off to a rocky start when in 2003, as a condition of being made a cardinal, he was forced to issue a public pledge to defend church teaching on homosexuality, celibacy and contraception. He was pressured to make the pledge after he had called for a "full and open discussion" on such matters.

At the time, O'Brien said he had been misunderstood and wanted to clarify his position. But it's clear now he never really changed his mind; On Friday, three days before his resignation was made public, O'Brien told the BBC that celibacy should be reconsidered since it's not based on doctrine but rather church tradition and "is not of divine origin."

It appeared to be something of a parting shot, reasserting beliefs that he had kept quiet for a decade.

At home, at O'Brien's St. Mary's Roman Catholic Cathedral in Edinburgh, his decision was met with shock and disbelief.

"There are a lot of unanswered questions here and I am unhappy about that people can make such serious charges while remaining anonymous," said David Murphy, 52, an administrator from Edinburgh. "It's like he's been hounded out of office without a proper chance to defend himself."

But Peter Mitchell, 32, a church-goer from Fife, conceded that the church may have to brace itself for scandal. "These don't appear to be random allegations, we are talking about three serving priests who are being very specific and I don't think they would lie in this way."

O'Brien said in a statement that he was in "indifferent health" and had offered his resignation last November ? a statement confirmed by the Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi.

Lombardi said the pope had merely acted on it now as he clears up his final tasks before stepping down. Usually the pope waits until after the 75th birthday to accept a resignation; in this case Benedict acted a few weeks shy of O'Brien's March 17 birthday.

"Looking back over my years of ministry: For any good I have been able to do, I thank God. For any failures, I apologize to all whom I have offended," O'Brian said in his statement. He said he would pray for the cardinals in Rome but that he himself would not participate.

"I do not wish media attention in Rome to be focused on me ? but rather on Pope Benedict XVI and on his successor," O'Brien said. "However, I will pray with them and for them that, enlightened by the Holy Spirit, they will make the correct choice for the future good of the church."

During a briefing with reporters at the Vatican last week, a Vatican historian, Ambrogio Piazzoni, was asked about the campaign to keep Mahony away from the voting because he covered up sexual abuse by priests. Piazzoni said while in the past some cardinals have been impeded either by illness or by interference from their governments, none has stayed away because of a stain on his own reputation.

"The thing that characterizes a cardinal is to be an elector of the pope," he told reporters then.

Kanye West Slams 'Suit & Tie': Is He Jealous of JT?

Kanye West loves Beyonce and Jay-Z. In fact, he loves them so much that he infamously got up on stage at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards and gave his "I'mma let you finish" speech to defend the Queen B. That's why it comes as a bit of a shock to find out that not only does West not like Jay-Z's collaboration with Justin Timberlake on "Suit & Tie," but he actively despises it.

MSI GT70 One-609US Dragon Edition

The MSI GT70 One-609US Dragon Edition is every inch a gamer's PC, from the goofy spelled out number in the model name to the coiled dragons emblazoned across the lid and palmrest. A rainbow of colors bursts from the keyboard backlight, and though it will cost you a good chunk of change, the performance is very good. Some gamers like basic black, and others want custom paint jobs, but for most gamers, the GT70 One Dragon Edition offers everything you might want at a price that isn't too astronomical.

Design
Like most gaming laptops, the GT70 One Dragon Edition is one big system. Measuring 2.17 by 16.85 by 11.34 inches (HWD)?similar to the Maingear Nomad 17 Ultimate?it won't even fit into the laptop compartment of most bags. With a weight of 8.29 pounds (10.45 pounds if you include the power adapter), carrying it around is a backbreaking proposition. You'll be able to take it with you to a LAN party, but this beast will be fairly stationary from day to day. If you want something more portable, there's always the slim Razer Blade (2012).

The chassis is primarily constructed of plastic, with a reinforcing layer of aluminum across the lid and palmrest. To really drive home the "Dragon Edition" tag, the silhouette of a coiled dragon is imprinted into the brushed crimson anodized aluminum on the lid and palmrest. The 17.6-inch display looks good with a 1,920-by-1,080 resolution IPS panel, though the viewing angles are only so-so, with shifts in color when viewed at an angle. For the gamer sitting dead-center in front of the screen, however, the display is excellent. And anti-reflective coating also cuts down on any distracting glare.

The keyboard, manufactured by SteelSeries, features multi-colored backlight. Different colors can be assigned to different portions of the keyboard, and several distinctive lightning patterns can be selected, letting you light up the board with a rainbow of colors. The keys themselves are chiclet-style and provide excellent feedback, but the layout could be improved. The QWERTY keyboard and the 10-key numeric pad aren't physically separated, and as a result, the arrow keys are crammed in between, resulting in a half-size Shift key to accommodate the Up arrow, and a half-size 0 key on the keypad. This is an especially puzzling design choice since there is ample room for all of the keys; there is an extra inch and half of space on either side of the keyboard.

Above the keyboard are two metal speaker grilles, covering the Dynaudio stereo speakers, which are complimented further by a built in subwoofer. THX TruStudio Pro software sound optimization further improves the sound quality. Whether we tested it with the latest Iron Man 3 trailer or the intricate beats of Daft Punk, the quality was good, producing crisp clear sound and good volume.

Features
MSI has outfitted the GT70 One Dragon Edition with as rich a selection of ports as you'll find on a gaming laptop. On the right is a tray-loading Blu-ray drive (BD-R/BD/DVD-RW Dual Layer) and two USB 2.0 ports; on the left, three USB 3.0 ports, a 7-in-1 card slot (SD/SDXC/SDHC/MMC/MS/Pro/xD), and four audio connectors?Microphone input, Headphone out, Line-in Audio?with gold plating for lower noise and distortion, and MSI Audio Boost with integrated amplification for better sound.

The rear of the laptop has a power connector, VGA output, eSATA port, and HDMI output. A Kensington lock slot lets you physically secure the laptop, a must for larger LAN parties and tournaments. For networking, the GT70 One Dragon Edition is equipped with a Killer DoubleShot configuration network adapter, which combines 802.11n Wi-Fi and Ethernet. Both are optimized for speed, prioritizing latency-sensitive application traffic. The result is improved performance for online gaming, and video streaming.

More than a full terabyte of data storage is available, thanks to the combination of a 750GB 7,400 rpm hard drive and two 128GB solid-state drives (SSD) in RAID 0 (striped) array. The combination makes for a sizable amount of storage and optimum performance. MSI doesn't put any needless software onto its new systems, just the Windows 8 (64-bit) operating system and a few tools for backup and calibration, so the new GT70 One Dragon Edition has nearly all of that storage space available right out of the box.

MSI covers the GT70 Dragon Edition with a one-year warranty covering parts and labor. It also includes a gaming-rig sized backpack?since most laptop bags simply can handle something so big?and an over-sized dogtag-like id plate, that can either be attached to the bag or worn like something you'd see on a geeky Mr. T.

Vote for Houston in the Mayor?s Challenge final

From the HuffPo:

Vote below for your favorite idea among the 20 Mayors Challenge finalists! Voting is open from February 20 through March 6.

The Bloomberg Philanthropies? Mayors Challenge is a competition designed to inspire America?s mayors to generate innovative ideas that solve major challenges and improve city life. The Huffington Post and Bloomberg Philanthropies have partnered to give readers an opportunity to select their favorite idea among the 20 finalists. Click the grid here to learn more about the 20 finalists or scroll down to watch videos from each city.

Click the link above to cast your vote. If you need a reminder of what this is about, see here and here for previous blogging, and here for Mayor Parker?s pitch for Houston:

One Bin for All is a revolutionary idea for residents to discard all materials in one bin, treating ?trash? as valuable assets, dramatically increasing recycling using game changing technologies.

Recycling, admittedly, is difficult. Though I am an avid recycler, I can be stumped by aluminum foil or a wet paper towel or a plastic straw. Not surprisingly, so are millions of citizens, and it is estimated that cities only effectively recycle about 30 percent of their trash.

[...]

This first-of-its-kind innovation uses technology in a way that has never been done before. Allowing technology and new process systems to sort household ?trash? and derive an initial 55 percent diversion rate, and upwards of 75 percent with composting, anaerobic digestion and catalytic conversion (biomass-to-fuel) is more efficient and effective. The technologies (shredders, sensors, density separators and optical scanners) have been used previously in the waste, mining, or refining industries, but will be combined in a new process which will yield a much higher diversion rate. This system has the potential for cities across the globe to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and make a significant contribution to improved air quality, provide an easy-to-use program for residents, save money and increase revenues.

Our innovation will:

  • Provide every residence with curbside One Bin for All services;
  • Decrease the volume of waste sent to landfills and increase recycling rates;
  • Improve air quality by eliminating truck routes and reducing methane emissions from landfills; and
  • Manage costs associated with waste collection and disposal and recycling, saving cities money.

By building the first total material resource recovery facility in the US, Houston has the opportunity to improve the health and quality of life of its citizens, divert more municipal solid waste than any other large City in the nation, save money, change the way citizens think about materials, reduce extraction of raw materials and influence other cities to embrace this transformation.

There?s a video over there as well, so click to see it and then click here to vote. You have until March 6 to cast your vote. Hair Balls has more.

HP's 1Q offers glimmer of hope, stock surges

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Hewlett-Packard Co.'s latest quarterly results provided a glimmer of hope after months of gloomy news.

The fiscal first-quarter numbers announced Thursday topped what the slumping personal computer maker's own management and stock market analysts had forecast.

Like other PC makers, HP has been struggling to adapt to a shift toward smartphones and tablet computers, which are siphoning sales from desktop and laptop machines made by HP and other companies. Adding to the problems were some acquisitions gone awry. Over the past two quarters, HP announced losses totaling $15.3 billion as the company accounted for those mishaps, to the shock of Wall Street. The jolt caused HP's stock to plunge to its lowest price in a decade just three months ago.

The shares have rebounded since then, though they still remain about 20 percent below where they were in Sept. 2011, when the company fired Leo Apotheker as its CEO and hired Meg Whitman, who became a high-tech star while running eBay Inc.'s online marketplace.

The same problems are still plaguing HP, but signs of progress in the latest quarter indicated that the company's turnaround efforts are running ahead of schedule. Whitman has consistently said it may be several years before HP is on solid ground again.

She said the company is in the best condition since she was hired as CEO. "The patient showed some improvement," Whitman told The Associated Press in a Thursday interview.

She stopped short of predicting HP will be fully cured more quickly than she anticipated. "I don't want to get out over my skis." Whitman said.

In a show of confidence, HP provided an earnings forecast for the Feb.-April quarter that was higher than analysts' projections.

The company's stock rose 94 cents, or 5.5 percent, to $18.04 in after-hours trading. At its recent low, the stock was down to $11.35.

HP earned $1.2 billion, or 63 cents per share, in the three months ending Jan. 31. That was a 16 percent decrease from nearly $1.5 billion, or 73 cents per share, at the same time a year earlier.

Excluding certain accounting items, HP would have earned 82 cents per share. That was well above the average estimate of 71 cents per share among analysts surveyed by FactSet.

Revenue fell 6 percent to $28.4 billion, about $470 million above analysts' projections. It was nearly $30 billion a year earlier. It's the sixth consecutive quarter that HP's revenue has dropped from the previous year.

Excluding one-time items, HP expects to earn 80 to 82 cents per share in the current quarter. Analysts estimated earnings of 77 cents per share.

HP isn't predicting when its revenue downturn might end. In a conference call with analysts, Whitman said HP still faces a "long road ahead" before its revenue is growing again. To help offset the revenue decline, HP is in the process of eliminating 29,000 jobs, or about 8 percent of the workforce when it was announced, in a streamlining scheduled to be completed by Oct. 2014. Whitman said about 15,300 of the jobs targeted in the cost-cutting program have been jettisoned so far. About 3,500 people left in the most recent quarter.

The Palo Alto, Calif., company's biggest headaches remain rooted in the HP division that includes PCs, where revenue fell 8 percent from the previous year. Printer sales also continued to slide, although not quite as severely, with a 5 percent decrease.

Whitman is trying to reverse the trend by expanding into tablet computers and selling an array of machines running on Windows 8, a radical redesign of Microsoft's widely used operating system.

HP had tried to previously challenge Apple Inc.'s trend-setting iPad in 2011 with a tablet running on software that it acquired from Palm Inc., only to quickly abandon the device. The company's latest tablets run on Windows 8 or scaled-down versions of that operating system.

Whitman also believes HP could benefit from rival Dell Inc.'s agreement to sell itself to CEO Michael Dell and a group of investors for $24.4 billion. If it's approved the deal could saddle Dell with an additional $15 billion in debt ? a burden that Whitman believes will raise questions about the company's ability to innovate and tend to the needs of its corporate customers.

"It is an opportunity for us because I know firsthand what instability is like," Whitman said in the AP interview. "I think we are really well positioned for this next big shift in technology. We are excited about it and feel good about where we are."

Dell's decision to end its 25-year history as a publicly traded company has spurred speculation that HP might take a radical step, too, to boost its stock price. The most popular theory is that HP will sell or spin off its PC and printer operations to concentrate on more profitable technology markets in business software and various services.

"We have no plans to break up HP," Whitman said in an interview. "We are convinced that these divisions are better together than they are alone."

Another Republican senator backs Hagel for Pentagon chief

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Chuck Hagel's path to confirmation as President Barack Obama's new secretary of defense became more secure on Thursday when Republican Senator Richard Shelby said he would support the nomination.

Shelby joined almost every other Republican senator a week ago in delaying a vote on confirming Hagel in order to allow colleagues more time to examine Hagel's record, said spokesman Jonathan Graffeo.

He now will vote for a motion to stop debate, ending the delay, and in favor of the nomination, barring any surprises between now and a confirmation vote, Graffeo said.

Fifteen other Republican senators signed a letter to Obama on Thursday asking that he withdraw Hagel's nomination, saying they respected the military service of the decorated Vietnam War veteran but that he lacked the bipartisan support and confidence to serve effectively.

The White House said it still supported Hagel and expected he would be confirmed. The Senate is expected to vote next week.

Shelby, a five-term senator from Alabama, served with Hagel during the nominee's two terms as a Republican senator from Nebraska. He is at least the third Republican - along with Mike Johanns and Thad Cochran - to back Hagel's confirmation.

Shelby's support for Hagel was first reported by the Decatur Daily newspaper. "He's probably as good as we're going to get," he told the Alabama paper.

Democrats control 55 votes in the 100-member Senate, and none has come out against Hagel. While he has long looked likely to garner the 51 votes he needs, his backers feel it will strengthen him as Pentagon chief to have as much bipartisan support as possible. Hagel would succeed Leon Panetta as defense secretary.

REPUBLICAN OBJECTIONS

Many Republicans have fiercely opposed Hagel's nomination as civilian chief at the Pentagon since it was announced on January 7.

Hagel broke from his party as a senator by opposing former President George W. Bush's handling of the Iraq war, infuriating some Republicans. Some have also raised questions about whether he is sufficiently supportive of Israel or tough enough on Iran.

Republicans also worry Hagel will be too supportive of any effort by Obama to include cuts in Pentagon spending as a way to deal with yawning U.S. budget deficits.

Hagel's performance at his confirmation hearing before the Senate Armed Services Committee drew harsh criticism. Even some Democrats said he appeared at times unprepared or hesitant in the face of aggressive questioning.

The pressure continued with Thursday's letter from the 15 Republicans, which cited among other things statements by the former senator that they said "proclaimed the legitimacy of the current regime in Iran."

The White House blasted what it called continued political posturing by Republicans.

"We firmly believe that Senator Hagel will be confirmed, but the waste of time is of consequence," White House spokesman Jay Carney said at his daily news briefing.

"There are 66,000 men and women in uniform in Afghanistan and we need our new secretary of defense on the job to be part of the significant decisions that have to be made as we bring that war to a responsible end," he said.

Many of the 15 senators who signed the letter have been among Hagel's most vocal opponents. They included half of the 12 Republicans on the Senate armed services panel - James Inhofe, the top Republican on the committee, as well as Lindsey Graham, Roger Wicker, David Vitter, Ted Cruz and Mike Lee.

The other nine were Senators John Cornyn, Patrick Toomey, Marco Rubio, Daniel Coats, Ron Johnson, James Risch, John Barrasso, Tom Coburn and Tim Scott.

Republican Senator John McCain, a member of the committee and one of Hagel's most outspoken critics, was not among the signatories. He said on Sunday that he did not believe Hagel's nomination should be held up any further.

Inhofe, who has contended that Hagel is "cozy" with Iran, also sent a "Dear Colleague" letter to his fellow Republican senators on Thursday lobbying for them to back a procedural tactic that would continue to delay the Senate vote on Hagel's confirmation, the Hill newspaper reported.

Domenici acknowledges having son outside marriage

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) ? Former Sen. Pete Domenici has disclosed that he fathered a secret child in the 1970s with the 24-year-old daughter of one of his Senate colleagues ? a startling revelation for a politician with a reputation as an upstanding family man.

Domenici and Michelle Laxalt sent statements to the Albuquerque Journal that announced the relationship for the first time and identified their son as Nevada attorney Adam Paul Laxalt. They said they decided to go public with their decades-old secret because they believed someone was about to release the information in an attempt to smear Domenici.

"I deeply regret this and am very sorry for my behavior," Domenici, 80, said in his statement. "I hope New Mexicans will view that my accomplishments for my beloved state outweigh my personal transgression."

The Journal reported on the relationship in an article published Wednesday.

Domenici was the longest-serving senator in New Mexico history when he retired in 2008 after six terms. He was known for his unflagging support of the state's national laboratories and military installations, and he became a power broker for his work on the federal budget and energy policy.

Domenici voted for the impeachment of former President Bill Clinton in 1998 after his affair with Monica Lewinsky, but his floor statement focused on the fact that Clinton had lied under oath, noting that the trial "has never been about the President's private sex acts, as tawdry as they have been."

But in the same speech, he cited the value of "truthfulness" and how it's the first pillar of good character.

Reached at his home in Washington on Wednesday, Domenici said he had nothing more to say. Domenici and his wife have been married more than 50 years and have eight children.

The scandal has all the elements of an inside-the-Beltway soap opera.

Michelle Laxalt is the daughter of former U.S. Sen. Paul Laxalt, himself a significant political figure in the 1970s and '80s as he served as Nevada governor and two terms in the Senate alongside Domenici.

Michelle Laxalt became a prominent lobbyist, Republican activist and television commentator after the affair. She said in the statement that she chose to raise her son as a single parent and that the two agreed that it would be a private matter.

"One night's mistake led to pregnancy more than 30 years ago," she said.

Laxalt's prominence in national politics occasionally put her in an odd position of publicly discussing the integrity of the man who is the father of her child.

In 2008, Domenici was reprimanded by the Senate ethics committee for his involvement in a scandal over the Bush administration's firing of eight U.S. attorneys.

At the time, Laxalt defended Domenici's integrity on CNN, calling him an honorable man who was supporting "no fewer than eight children."

The website for Adam Laxalt's law firm said he is a former U.S. Navy officer and lawyer who served in Iraq. He also worked for then-Sen. John Warner, R-Va., and as a special assistant to an undersecretary of state, according to the website.

He has also written a number of conservative columns against policies like Obamacare and the lifting of the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy for gays for publications like the National Review Online, American Spectator and the Las Vegas Review-Journal. And he serves on the board of Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada.

Domenici is the latest in a long line of politicians who were forced to reveal secret children, from one-time Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards to former Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. Just last week, U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen of Tennessee acknowledged that he's the father of a 24-year-old woman after the two were seen communicating on Twitter during the State of the Union address.

Earlier this month, the daughter of the late U.S. Sen. Strom Thurmond and his family's maid died in South Carolina. Essie Mae Washington-Williams, whose mother was black, didn't come forward and identify Thurmond as her father until after his death at age 100 in 2003.

Thurmond, who was white, was an ardent segregationist for decades.

Domenici said he was sorry that he caused hurt and disappointment for his wife and other family members. He said he disclosed the situation to his family several months ago.

"I have apologized as best as I can to my wife, and we have worked together to strengthen our relationship," Domenici said.

Domenici told the Journal his son participated in the drafting of his statement, but it was unclear if the two had a prior relationship.

The Laxalts did not immediately respond to emails and phone calls seeking comment.

In New Mexico, political leaders said they were surprised, but they doubted the revelation would negatively impact the Domenici legacy.

"It is going to make his legacy a little bit more colorful because he is not exactly the kind of guy you expect that from," said Maurilio Vigil, a political science professor emeritus at Highlands University in Las Vegas, N.M.

"It is surprising because he was always an upstanding type of fellow, a family man, and that was his image."

Edward Lujan, former chairman of the Republican Party of New Mexico, said he had heard rumors about the child years ago, but "I didn't pay much attention. I didn't care. Those kinds of things honestly are between the families and has nothing to do with how he did his job."

"I don't think there was anything hypocritical about anything," Lujan said. "I admire him as much today as I did yesterday and the day before."

Republican Gov. Susana Martinez said her "thoughts and prayers are with the family.

"It's a difficult time," she said, "but Sen. Domenici's work is a very separate and distinct issue. I think he's done great things for the state and I don't think anyone will ever forget the hard work and all that he brought to New Mexico."

Others weren't as strong in their defense of Domenici and sizing up how the revelations would affect this legacy.

"I'll leave that for historians and other people to judge," said former Gov. Toney Anaya, a Democrat who ran a close race against Domenici in 1978.
