The Japanese display maker is struggling with high costs that have cut into its margins on the screens, raising the question of whether Apple might provide financial incentives to speed up production, the source said.
At first blush, Sharp leaking to the press they're making the screens, then leaking that those screens may sound less like a news story and more like "Hey, Apple, sure would be unfortunate if you don't get your fancy new screens on time, wouldn't it?" In other words, the cheesy shakedown plots to half the cheap TV procedurals in the 80s.
However, Apple did face supply constraints with the iPhone 4 and iPad, often blamed on the availability of the displays. With the iPhone 4S and particularly the iPad 3, Apple showed even a 2048x1536 Retina display couldn't stop them from rolling out more volume, to more countries, faster than ever before.
But the iPhone 5 is rumored to use new, in-cell technology for the display, allowing for a single, 0.5mm slimmer layer. Production on those is still ramping up, and it's not inconceivable that yield rates could play a roll in how Apple plans international launches between the first stage (which includes the U.S.) on September 21, the second stage on or around October 5, and subsequent stages.
We'll find out on September 12 when Apple is expected to hold their next iPhone event.

A new mouse study shows that a drug originally developed to stop cancerous tumors may hold the potential to prevent abnormal brain cell growth and learning disabilities in some children ? if they can be diagnosed early enough.
According to researchers at the University of Michigan, the study sets the stage for more research on how the anti-tumor medication could be used to protect the brains of young children with the genetic disease neurofibromatosis 1, as well as other diseases that affect the same cellular signaling pathway.
Neurofibromatosis 1, or NF1, affects one in every 3,000 children, causing benign tumors to grow throughout the body, large head size, and other issues. Many children with NF1 also struggle with learning to read, write, do math, and behave well, according to researchers.
The impact on brain function is considered the most common ? and most serious ? issue caused by NF1, and often appears before other symptoms, except for brown patches on the skin that are often mistaken for birthmarks.
But while the tumors that erupt mostly later in life have been well-studied, NF1?s effect on brain function isn?t understood, the researchers note.
In the new study, the team studied neural stem cells ? a kind of master cell that can become any type of neural tissue. In newborn mice with two copies of the genetic mutation that causes NF1, neural stem cells in a key area of the brain were far more likely to produce a kind of ?helper? nerve cell called glia. They produced far fewer?neurons, which send and receive crucial signals in the brain and body.
The scientists then took aim at the abnormal cell growth by giving the mice an experimental drug that has already been used in clinical trials for advanced cancer. Called PD0325901, the drug, known as a MEK inhibitor, blocks a specific action within cells called the MEK/ERK pathway.
Mice with the NF1 mutation that got the drug from birth developed normally, in contrast to mice with the same genetic mutations that didn?t receive the drug. The untreated mice appeared normal at birth, but within a few days had become hunched and scruffy, with abnormal growth of their bodies and brain cells.
The new paper?s senior author, Yuan Zhu, Ph.D., cautioned that the drug used in the study may not be appropriate to give to children who have been diagnosed with NF1. But other MEK inhibitors are being developed against cancer.
?The important thing is that we have shown that by treating during this brief window of time early in life, when neural stem cells in a developing brain still have time to ?decide? what kind of cell to become, we can cause a lasting effect on neural development,? said Zhu, an associate professor of internal medicine at the University of Michigan?s Medical School.
For a drug-based intervention to work, it would have to be given soon after developmental delays or benign tumors are noted in an infant or toddler, and after a NF1 diagnosis is made, Zhu noted.
About half of all people with NF1 inherited the mutated gene from a parent, while the other half develop it spontaneously in the womb. The disease affects individual patients very differently, he said, noting that one child born to a parent with mild NF1 can have a severe form of the disease, while their siblings can have mild or moderate symptoms.
Some people with NF1 have a ?double hit? form of the disease, where both copies of the gene are mutated in certain body cells. The second mutation, according to the scientists, likely occurs in a neural stem cell that goes on to produce unusual neural cells. These patients often have severe learning disabilities, and an enlarged corpus callosum ? a structure that connects the two halves of the brain and contains a large concentration of glia, the same cells that the mice in the new study had larger numbers of.
In addition to NF1, the researchers predict that their findings may have importance for patients with other genetic conditions that affect the same cell-signaling pathway called RAS. Collectively called neuro-cardio-facial-cutaneous (NCFC) syndromes or ?RASopathies,? they include Leopard syndrome, Noonan syndrome, Costello syndrome and Leguis syndrome. Like NFI, all these conditions affect the brains, circulation system and the face or head.

Bacteria living naturally within the gut provide a gateway to flab, according to a few reports this week. These bacteria may explain how antibiotics fatten farm animals and perhaps people too, and how certain genes predispose organisms to obesity.
In a study published 22 August in Nature, researchers mimicked what farmers have been doing for decades to fatten up their livestock: they fed young mice a steady low dose of antibiotics. The antibiotics altered the composition of bacteria in the guts of the mice and also changed how the bacteria broke down nutrients. The bacteria in treated mice activated more genes that turn carbohydrates into short-chain fatty acids, and they turned on genes related to lipid conversion in the liver. Presumably, these shifts in molecular pathway enable fat build-up. Just as farm animals get fat, the antibiotic-fed mice put on weight.
Martin Blaser, a microbiologist at New York University in New York, says that parents might unknowingly be promoting a similar phenomenon when they treat common ailments and ear infections in their children. To back that idea up, he points to another study he authored. The study, published on 21 August, found that a disproportionate number of 11,000 kids in the United Kingdom who were overweight by the time they were 3 years old had taken antibiotics within their first 6 months of life.
?Antibiotics are extremely important drugs,? Blaser says, ?but especially when given early in life, I believe they come at a cost that parents, doctors and patients should be aware of.?
Microbes also seem to be an accomplice in genetically induced pudginess, according to a study published today in Nature Immunology. When researchers rid mice of a gene encoding a gut molecule called lymphotoxin, segmented filamentous bacteria overwhelmed the normal microbial community. These bacteria may gobble up excess fat like tapeworms ? the mice remained thin no matter what they ate. What?s more, mice with lymphotoxin intact were able to keep their slim figures when the researchers implanted the segmented filamentous bacteria in their guts.
Although the papers provide tantalizing links, Peter Turnbaugh, a microbiologist at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, says that there?s more work to be done before microbes enter the limelight in the fight against obesity. ?These studies suggest mechanisms by which different bacteria promote adiposity, but they don?t fully define pathways,? he says. ?What really excites me about these papers is that now we have two new mouse models to do the follow-up experiments.?

The safety of client files is, and should be a concern for lawyers, and Dropbox has responded to security questions with high-level encryption and a two-factor authentication process.

How far apart is long distance?
I was just wondering, what are everyone's opinions on how far apart a couple need to live before their relationship is classed as "long distance"?
My boyfriend lives 50 miles away from my large city in a small village by the coast, which is two train journeys and about an hour and a half in total. He says we're in a long distance relationship but I disagree, I think it has to be about 80 miles? For example, I'd say Manchester to Birmingham is long distance, but Manchester to Liverpool isn't.
I asked a friend and she said as a general rule it's anywhere over an hour away, or anywhere you can't get one bus to. (I disagree with the second part - for me it's two bus journeys to her house and she only lives ~10 miles away!)

If the relationship works, should it matter? I apologise in advance for being a tad blunt, but this is somewhat inconsequential if you and your boyfriend are in a relationship that works.

I would class long distance as any distance that means you have to plan to see each other in advance. By that I mean you can't just ring them up and say 'do you want to come over'. So for some people it could be half an hour.

An Algerian hostage held by an Islamist militant group in lawless northern Mali has called on his country to save his life, according to a video seen by AFP on Sunday.
The video was handed to AFP by an intermediary of the militant group Movement for Oneness and Jihad in West Africa (MUJAO), which is holding the Algerian man captive.
"I ask Algerian authorities to find a solution to save my life," he said in Arabic, reading from a text. The man was identified by an AFP journalist as an employee from the Algerian consulate in Mali's northern city of Gao.
In the video, he is seen with cropped hair and a beard, in traditional dress, seated before a black drape with a drawing depicting a sword.
He added in the video that "countries like Mauritania (and) France have negotiated in the past to get their hostages freed and Algeria should just do the same thing."
MUJAO, an ally of Al-Qaeda's north African branch AQMI and armed Islamists Ansar Dine, had claimed responsibility for the kidnapping carried out on April 5 of seven Algerians from the north African country's consulate in Gao.
In May, MUJAO demanded the release of Islamist fighters imprisoned in Algeria and a sum of 15 million euros in exchange for the seven captives.
On July 12, it said it had freed three out of seven hostages and repeated its conditions for the release of the other captives.

And talk about the perfect vehicle: mega-rich real estate magnate David Siegel and his ex-model turned trophy wife Jackie are busy living the elite life and constructing their 90,000 square-foot dream house in Orlando that goes by the working name Versailles, what would be America?s largest private home.
The year is 2007, and David is owner of Westgate Resorts, a real estate firm he started out of his garage that grew to the largest privately held time-share company in the world. David brags about delivering Florida for George W. Bush in the 2000 election and bankrolls beauty pageants seemingly so he can scan its contestants for candidates to be the next Mrs. Siegel. Most of all, he is sinking much of his wealth into construction of his most lavish resort, the 52-story PH Towers Westgate in Las Vegas.
Jackie, a 40-something former beauty queen 31 years David?s junior, whiles away her days shopping and hobnobbing. Outsourcing care of the couple?s eight children and four dogs to her house staff of 19, Jackie excitedly monitors both her Botox injections and the progress of Versailles, including the glut of adornments imported to decorate the mammoth manse.
What starts as a cinematic study of Versailles? singular extravagance?in all senses of the word?morphs into something more profound once the subprime mortgage crisis hits and the housing bubble bursts. The Siegels? overindulgence, spearheaded by Jackie?s dizzy bliss, is foisted for farcical scorn during their mid-aughts heyday. The characters are framed in basic terms: David, while boorish, is also a self-made man and American success story, while Jackie is the superficial gold digger. As the Siegels? luck changes, however, so too does the portraits of our leads. David becomes withdrawn and surly, simultaneous with the audience?s ironic realization that his fortune is built on a foundation of real estate speculation, selling pipe dreams to working-class couples who ?want to vacation like a Rockefeller.? Meanwhile, Jackie surprisingly doubles down on the devotion to her family. She?ll never win any awards for Mom (or Wife or Employer or Pet Owner) of the Year, but Jackie?who grew up a poor kid in New York State?stands by her man under circumstances in which true trophy wives would dart for their divorce attorney.
There?s an intelligence and symmetry to Greenfield?s presentation that elevates The Queen of Versailles beyond a simple derision of rank economic excess. There?s the eye-opening parallel between David and his father, both men who ultimately squandered their fortunes in the sands of Vegas (David on high-rises, dad at the gambling tables). And there?s the film-ending imagery of fireworks exploding in the night sky over Disney World, shot through an empty window frame at Versailles, a callback to a throwaway remark by Jackie earlier in the film explaining why the window was placed in that spot to begin with.
Indeed, Greenfield won Best Documentary Directing honors at the Sundance Film Festival last January. But while Jackie attended the film?s premiere, David was suing Greenfield and Sundance for defamation. The legal basis for suit?ably chronicled in a June 2012 article in The New York Times by Joe Nocera?appears flimsy. But David?s complaint does give pause over some of Greenfield?s process. His gripe that certain scenes are shown out of context or strict chronological order in order to amplify dramatic effect is common to all strata of filmmaking, including documentary. On the hand, while Greenfield denies that she encouraged Jackie to rent a stretch limousine for a lunch outing to McDonald?s (one of the film?s signature scenes), she admits that much of David?s anxiety during their last visit to the Siegels? home in late 2011 was due to his desire for the film crew to leave, not depression over his financial and family situation as the movie leads you to believe.
Still, there?s no equivocating the squalor of David?s TV room, where he secludes himself a la Howard Hughes during the film?s latter stages, desperately divining a solution to his wealth woes. Moreover, there?s rarely been a more provocative juxtaposition of haves and have-nots than when a now cash-strapped Jackie is forced to do her Christmas shopping at Wal-Mart but?in an act of cockeyed defiance?brings along her housekeeper and buys enough merchandise to fill several shopping carts. While she may not reign over Versailles, this queen isn?t ready to abdicate her throne.
